Oakland celebrity sighting

OK, I was trying to maintain my cool and NOT post this until he left. But Boots Riley of The Coup, was sitting kitty-corner to me for about 3 hours while I worked here at Temescal Cafe on Telegraph.





I talked to him briefly. He's very nice and soft-spoken. I didn't want to be the annoying fan. He told me he's working on a project with Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine) called Street Sweepers, which should be out in January. I wish I could say I came up with something brilliant to say about one of his songs relating to politics or socio-economic justice. But since I have decided to move into Temescal Cafe - where it's always cool and they'll serve me eggs and sausage for $3 - maybe I'll see him around enough to say, "Wassup, Boots!" and then discuss the feminism in "Wear Clean Drawers."

Man, it's hard enough when an attractive history professor sits in your peripheral vision (he was very nice, too), but when an attractive, brilliant iconoclastic hip-hop star plops down in your sight line, it's kind of crazy-making.

I don't think this is the guy, but some dude likes to stop by my studio in el cerrito every once in a while and chat. He says he's in the coup and that he lives near my studio.

That's weird. I think Boots is the only guy in The Coup, but I'm sure they have all sorts of collaborators. Boots said he lives in West Oakland.

Honestly, I think the only thing this guy was collaborating on was some johnny walker red. Yeah, I know it wasn't that boots guy. It's either possible he collaborated in some way or just likes to whip out tall tales.

The one complaint I have about the place is its hours. Even on weekdays it closes at 4!
